    Job description

    As a new member of the group, you are supposed to contribute to research activities in the group and gradually build your own independent research profile according to your interests. You are expected to work towards a doctoral degree, and participate in the teaching activities of the group. The research group aims to increase the number of women in scientific positions. Female candidates are therefore encouraged to apply.

    Your profile

    You (will) have a Master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering or a closely related field. We are looking broadly for multiple individuals with the following profiles:

    Systems security in topics related to low-level software and hardware security

    Hardware design security, including but not limited to formal verification

    Computer systems, including operating system kernels, compilers and networking, with an interest in security

    Computer architecture and hardware design, including simulation, FPGA emulation, and fabrication, with an interest in security

    On top of the above, you must be able to think critically, have strong communication skills, be goal-oriented and enjoy collaboration. The group does heavy technical work and the candidate should expect and enjoy a fair amount of engineering during the course of their PhD.

    Development of new and novel methods for mechanically.testing materials in the neutron beam line for nuclearapplications

    A funded 3.5-year UK PhD studentship is available at the University of Birmingham with a tax-free stipend at the UKRI standard level. The project is co-funded by the Rolls-Royce Plc, co-supervised by Dr Joe Ward and Dr Mike Rogers.

    About the project

    The mechanical behaviour of zirconium alloy components under neutron flux is critical in justifying the behaviour of light water reactors. Irradiation creep plays a significant part in through-life distortion of components and a better mechanistic understanding of the creep processes operating under neutron flux would allow for more accurate prediction of through-life behaviour and support longer operational periods or simplified design, increasing cost effectiveness in the nuclear industry.

    The project will use the national nuclear user facilities (NNUF) particularly the accelerator-driven high flux neutron beam at the University of Birmingham (https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/nuclear/about-us/facilities/high-flux-neutron-facility.aspx) and the advanced Materials Research Facilities of UKAEA (https://mrf.ukaea.uk/). This project will also have close collaboration with other institutions, such as MIDAS (https://www.zr-midas.org/), on characterisation of irradiated materials and strong ties to industry with material and advice being provided.

    The candidate should have a 1st class or 2.1 Undergraduate or Masters degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Materials Science, or related discipline. A background in nuclear irradiation and/or mechanical/microstructural characterisation would be advantageous.

    job description

    We are looking for a talented junior researcher with a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in the language sciences and adjacent disciplines such as psychology or anthropology who is fascinated by the relationship between language, culture and cognition and who is able to carry out fieldwork among pastoralist communities in Africa. The PhD candidate will conduct research grounded in anthropological linguistics, descriptive linguistics and/or psycholinguistics to provide first-hand, comparative data and build on the NWO Veni project Cattle-talk: the language of color among East African pastoralists. The project looks at the language-culture-cognition interface to investigate the role played by culture in the relation between language (lexicon and grammar) and cognition.

    Tasks and responsibilities

    You are expected:

    Collecting audio-visual linguistic and cultural data through ethnographic fieldwork;

    Transcribing, annotating and analysing naturalistic data;

    Creating stimuli for the investigation of cross-linguistic domains, especially visual semantics;

    Presenting research results at international conferences and workshops;

    Publishing research results and write a PhD-thesis within the period of appointment;

    Teaching or assisting in teaching activities at bachelor or master level.

    Selection criteria:

    A completed Master’s degree in linguistics or adjacent disciplines such as psychology; or anthropology of language, with some experience in language analysis, cultural analysis, or experimental methods;

    Excellent research and fieldwork skills demonstrated by your Master's thesis;

    Good command of English or French;

    Working knowledge of an African language (depending on the study area)
